Small mistakes can harm babies — gentle, informed care keeps them safe.
Newborn babies are extremely delicate. Many traditional practices, well-meant advice from relatives, or common parenting myths can unknowingly put babies at risk. This page helps parents understand what should be avoided to protect their baby’s health, safety, and development.
🚫 Do NOT Give Honey Before 1 Year
Honey can contain spores that cause infant botulism — a serious, life-threatening illness. Babies under one year cannot fight these bacteria.
🚫 Do NOT Give Water in the First 6 Months
Breast milk already contains enough water. Giving plain water can:

🚫 Avoid Gripe Water / Janam Ghutti
These are not medically recommended. They:
- do not improve digestion
- interfere with feeding

🚫 Never Shake a Baby
Even mild shaking can cause serious brain injury (Shaken Baby Syndrome).If the baby is crying excessively, pause, place the baby safely, and calm yourself first.
🚫 Do NOT Use Pillows for Sleep
Soft pillows increase risk of suffocation. Babies must sleep:
- on a firm mattress
- flat surface
- without toys or loose bedding
🚫 Do NOT Overdress or Overheat
Too many clothes can cause overheating which increases risk of:
- dehydration
- fever
- sudden infant death
Baby needs only one layer more than adults.
🚫 Do NOT Apply Anything on Umbilical Cord
No oil, powder, turmeric, or home remedies.
Keep it:
- dry
- clean
- uncovered
It will fall naturally.
🚫 Avoid Force Feeding
Forcing milk causes:
- choking risk

Feed gently and responsively.
🚫 Do NOT Delay Vaccination
Delaying vaccines exposes babies to preventable life-threatening diseases.
🚫 Avoid Loud Stimulation & Excess Handling
Newborn brain is sensitive. Too much noise, visitors, or handling causes stress and irritability.
🚫 No Kajal / Surma in Eyes
Can cause:
- infection
- blocked tear duct
- lead toxicity
🚫 Avoid Self-Medication
Never give medicines without doctor advice — even common drops or syrups.
🚫 Avoid Unnecessary products
Newborn babies do not need commercial products for normal care. Many marketed items are unnecessary and sometimes harmful.Coconut natural oil is recommended .
Avoid routine use of:
- Gripe water
- Herbal digestion drops
- Baby tonics or appetite syrups
- Powder on face or body folds
- Scented lotions and strong oils
- Adult creams for rashes
- Bottles without medical need
- Pacifiers in early weeks (interferes with breastfeeding) and teeth growth when times comes .
Babies’ skin, gut and immune system are immature. Products disturb natural adaptation.
Simple care is safest:
