What might be happening?
Parents may notice:
- snorting or snuffling sounds
- noisy breathing during sleep
- sounds while feeding
- brief fast breathing
Baby usually:
- feeds well
- looks comfortable
- has normal color
Why this happens
Common harmless reasons:
- narrow newborn nasal passages
- mild mucus in the nose
- normal newborn breathing pattern
- soft airway structures
Newborns are natural nose breathers, so even small mucus can create sound.
What you should do now
- Keep baby’s nose clean
- Use saline nasal drops if needed, gentle massage over nose is recommended after nose drop instillation.
- Keep baby slightly upright after feeds
- Ensure room air is not too dry
- Continue normal feeding
Usually no treatment is needed.
What to avoid
- Avoid frequent suctioning
- Avoid home remedies inside the nose
- Avoid panic if baby is otherwise well
When to see a doctor
Seek medical care if:
- breathing looks fast or difficult
- chest pulling in during breathing
- baby turns blue or pale
- feeding becomes poor
- persistent cough or fever
These signs matter more than the sound itself.
