Gentle Reminder 🌿

Common Parent Questions

  1. Is it really dangerous to give honey to a baby?

Yes. Honey can contain spores that cause infant botulism, a rare but life-threatening illness. Babies under one year cannot fight these bacteria. Never give honey, even in tiny amounts.

  2. Can I give water to my newborn if the weather is hot?

No. Breast milk already contains enough water. Giving plain water can reduce milk intake, disturb electrolytes, and cause poor weight gain.Only breast milk (or prescribed formula) is needed.

  3. Why is gripe water or janam ghutti not recommended?

These products do not improve digestion and may contain harmful ingredients. They also interfere with breastfeeding and can cause infections or allergies.

  4. Is it safe to shake a baby gently to stop crying?

No. Even mild shaking can cause serious brain injury (Shaken Baby Syndrome).
If a baby is crying excessively, place them safely and calm yourself first.

  5. Should a newborn sleep with a pillow?

No. Pillows increase the risk of suffocation and sudden infant death.
    Babies should sleep:
    on a firm mattress
    on their back
with no pillows, toys, or loose bedding

  6. How many clothes should a newborn wear?

A baby needs only one layer more than an adult.
Over-dressing can cause overheating, dehydration, fever, and sudden infant death.

  7. Can I apply oil, turmeric, or powder on the umbilical cord?

No. The cord must be kept clean, dry, and uncovered.
Applying anything increases infection risk. It will fall off naturally.

  8. Is force feeding harmful?

Yes. Forcing milk can cause choking, vomiting, and feeding aversion.
    Always feed gently and responsively.

  9. Is it okay to delay vaccines?

No. Delaying vaccines exposes babies to preventable life-threatening diseases.
Timely vaccination is one of the strongest protections for newborns.

  10. Can loud noise and too many visitors harm a newborn?

Yes. Newborn brains are very sensitive.
Excess noise, handling, and stimulation cause stress, poor sleep, and irritability.

  11. Is kajal or surma safe for baby’s eyes?

    No. It can cause:
    infection
    blocked tear ducts
    lead toxicity
Nothing should be applied to baby’s eyes unless prescribed by a doctor.

  12. Can I give cough syrup, drops, or home medicines?

No. Never give any medicine without a doctor’s advice.
Even common syrups can be dangerous for newborns.

  13. Do babies need powders, tonics, oils, and baby products?

Most are unnecessary and sometimes harmful.
    A baby needs only:
    mother’s milk
    warmth
    cleanliness
    gentle touch
    Simple care is safest.

  14. When should I take my baby to a doctor?

Seek medical care if your newborn has:
    fever
    refuses feeds
    vomits repeatedly
    fast or difficult breathing
    very little urine
    extreme sleepiness
