Part Of the BePeace Newborn 101 series
Umbilical cord care is a simple but important part of newborn care. Most cord stumps heal on their own, but knowing what is normal helps parents stay calm and safe.
Essential First Guides For Every Parent
What is normal?
After birth, the umbilical cord is cut, leaving a small stump attached to your baby’s belly.
Normally:
- The stump looks yellow, greenish, or brown
- It dries, shrivels, and darkens
- It may have a mild smell
- A small amount of blood or discharge can appear
- It usually falls off in 5–15 days
The skin underneath may look raw or moist for a few days after it falls off — this is part of healing.
What is recommended?
Dry cord care is recommended
That means:
- Do not apply powders, oils, spirit, turmeric, ghee, or antiseptics
- Do not cover the stump with tight diapers
- Keep it clean and dry
- Let air reach it as much as possible
- Minimal touch
This allows the stump to dry and fall off naturally.
Is this serious?
Most umbilical cord changes are not dangerous.
Normal:
- Mild discharge
- Slight bleeding when it falls off
- Mild odor
- Dark or black stump
Not normal:
- Increasing redness around the base
- Swelling
- Thick yellow or green pus
- Bad smell that does not go away
- Baby acting unwell or fever
These can mean infection and need attention.
What should I do?
At home:
- Fold the diaper below the stump
- Clean gently with plain water if dirty
- Pat dry with a clean cloth
- Let it air dry
- Do not pull the stump, even if hanging
If blood appears, apply gentle pressure for a few minutes — this is usually enough.
When to see a doctor
Seek medical advice if:
- Redness spreads around the belly
- There is thick pus
- Bad smell continues
- Bleeding does not stop
- Baby has fever, poor feeding, or looks unwell
- The stump has not fallen off after 3 weeks
Common Parent Questions
-
How long does the umbilical cord take to fall off?
Usually 1–2 weeks. A small delay up to 3 weeks can still be normal if there is no redness, pus, or fever.
-
Is it normal if the cord smells a little?
A mild smell while it is drying is common. A strong or foul smell with discharge is not normal.
-
Can I give my baby a bath before the cord falls off?
Yes, you can give sponge baths. Avoid soaking the stump in water until it has fallen off and healed.
-
What should I clean the cord with ?
Use plain water and gently dry the area. Do not apply spirit, powder, or antiseptics unless advised by your doctor.
-
Is bleeding from the cord normal?
A few drops of blood when the cord falls off is normal. Continuous bleeding or soaking is not.
-
What happens after the cord falls off?
A small raw or moist area may remain for a few days. It should dry and heal on its own.
-
What is umbilical granuloma?
It is a small pink or red lump that may ooze slightly after the cord falls off. It is common and easily treated by a doctor.
-
Can diapers rub against the cord?
Yes. Fold the diaper below the stump to keep it dry and prevent irritation.
-
When should I worry about infection?
If there is spreading redness, pus, bad smell, fever, or the baby looks unwell, see a doctor immediately.
